How many times have you stood in line at the grocery store with a full cart waiting your turn, and the cashier is slow and taking her time with the customer ahead of you? Do you find yourself slowly seething because your patience is starting to wear thin?
This is an election year in the United States, and everyone each have their own idea of who would best serve as our president. Do you feel the need to rebuff ideas and proclamations of others about his idea of a particular candidate, or do you only side with those that reinforce YOUR beliefs and ideas?
You find that your partner is doing the same thing that he/she has always done, yet it’s becoming unnerving to you. The dishes aren’t done quite right, he/she has said things at a party that embarrassed you (due to your insecurity of allowing your partner to just ‘be’ herself/himself). Do you fly off the handle and unload a verbal reprimand?
These are all examples of what TOLERANCE is all about. The Angel of Tolerance is not the same as The Angel of Acceptance. (we’ll go there another time). The Angel of Tolerance teaches you to be OPEN to other’s ideas, set your own ego apart and not to make assumptions about situations.
You do not need to be the educator of politics. Allow others to find their own course. If you want your relationship to last, you will overlook the irritating little things, and allow your partner to be herself/himself without your ego stepping on toes and demanding certain actions that you deem “more appropriate”. Everyone has a story – and just remember that when you’re standing in line at the grocery store waiting. Maybe the cashier was consoling the woman taking up your precious time?
Learn to be more tolerant of things/situations that are out of your control, and you will find the world a more peaceful place for you. Ask yourself today: “What can I DO that will allow me to be more tolerant?”.
